The vision of the Bartlett is of a world where everything that’s built aims to add to the well-being of people and the environment. Through education, ideas and research that are inventive, forward-thinking and cross-disciplinary, the Bartlett seeks to encourage more innovative, collaborative responses to the world’s challenges from those involved in the creation of our cities, towns and settlements. In our own community and in society at large, we value creativity, integrity, equity and autonomy in the development of a sustainable, diverse world in which we all can live.

The Bartlett regards "radical thinking" as an important gene, whose roots come from the UCL established on a bold and radical agenda. It was the first English university to make courses available to people regardless of religious belief, social status and gender. It was a radical move even to create a chair of architecture, the first of any British university, and the spirit is alive and well today at The Bartlett.

The Bartlett School of Architecture (The Bartlett) is affiliated to University College London (UCL) and is recognized as one of the top and most influential architecture schools in the world. As one of the oldest but most radical faculties of its kind, the Bartlett has built a reputation for education and research that draws students and academics from across the world.

The Bartlett was established in 1841 and it was named The Bartlett in 1919 when the original benefactor, Sir Herbert Bartlett consented to his name being given to the department. A century later, it has grown into a home to twelve departments that have expertise in individual fields of the built-environment. The Bartlett is consistently ranked the highest in Europe and the UK and among the highest in the world for the "Architecture and the Built-Environment" category in all major rankings. In the 2019 QS World University Rankings, it was ranked first in the world.

The Bartlett has always been a place of innovation, creativity and leadership in teaching and research. And there have always been inspirational and internationally-renowned figures in the academic ranks, such as architectural historian Reyner Banham, planner and historian Sir Peter Hall, and architects AE Richardson, Walter Segal and Archigram founder Sir Peter Cook.
